The “Bad Food” List
These Are Not Good Food To Reduce Blood Pressure
- Cooked cereals with added salt content is a major tpye of foods to avoid. With too much salt this would not be a food to reduce blood pressure and actually could cause more problems for people working on controlling blood pressure.
- Ready-to-eat cereals may have some moderation in sodium but are generally low in potassium content; hence the addition of milk which increases the sodium level resulting to further disparity between their ratio. Occasionally, this type of food can be a part of the diet for those who want to have food to reduce blood pressure but it would be better to substitute with other low sodium and high potassium foods that can be eaten to compensate.
- Juice drinks that have minimal content of real juice. Check the label for artificial flavors and colors as well as its sugary ingredients and you may actually be surprised at what you are buying. We are all encouraged to keep up our fluid intake and when controlling blood pressure this is extremely important but many ‘so called’ juice drinks do not contain much real fruit and therefore would not be on our list of good food to reduce blood pressure.

You should also consider excluding spreads, luncheon meats, franks, bologna, corned beef loaf, barbecue loaf, salami, mortadella, sandwich spreads, Vienna sausage and turkey ham as these are all high in salt content.
- Seafood that is too high in sodium content although some may be eaten occasionally and with some caution as there are other health benefits with eating seafood. Processed seafood however are best avoided since their preparation uses additional salt for processing and as we now kwon food high in salt content is not a good food to reduce blood pressure. Examples of these processed seafood are deviled crab, crab cakes, crab imperial, canned crab, fish fillets, fillet almondine, fish sticks, canned fish, lobster paste, Newburg lobster, oysters, mussels, clams, sardines and shrimps whether breaded or french fried.
- Canned soups are another food type to avoid since most of them contain more than one gram of sodium chloride and less than the desirable level of potassium content. Do not be misled by such information as “no salt content” or “homemade”; such information does not relieve them of their high level of sodium ingredient. Real homemade soup however is very good for you as it is full of minerals from the “fresh” ingrediants you should be using and you are able to manage any salt being added and therefore ensure it remains a low sodium option – a healthy low sodium food to reduce blood pressure.
- Food flavorings generally contain mostly salt blended with other ingredients and therfore shouldn’t be used. Try adding natural herbs and spices instead and these are avaialble and not too expensive when you buy in season.
